Ethnic cultures often have certain characteristics to their noses, both in their outer appearance and internal structures. For this reason, it is best to address the noses of various ethnic cultures such as African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Mediterranean’s individually. “Cookie cutter" approaches to rhinoplasty rarely work well, and this is especially the case with ethnic rhinoplasty. Dr. Hovsepian, experienced in ethnic nose surgery (rhinoplasty), individualizes nose procedures helping numerous patients achieve an aesthetically balanced and natural facial appearance.
There are many examples of how this individualized approach offers the best outcome in ethnic
rhinoplasty. For instance, many people of Asian, African, and Latin descent have noses with wide
bases and broad tips. They often also have thick skin at the tip of the nose, which gives the tip a
rounded or “bulbous" appearance. Dr. Hovsepian understands the importance of preserving your
ethnic characteristics when performing rhinoplasty and works to improve both the appearance and the
breathing function of the nose. He is experienced and well-suited to provide optimal results in ethnic

Mediterranean noses may have a prominent hump combined with a tip that is oriented downward.
Goals concerning reduction of this hump are largely personal and vary from patient to patient. You
may want to reduce the hump slightly, maintaining more of the ethnic characteristics of the nose or
eliminate it all together, producing a straight profile.
Most Hispanic rhinoplasty patients can be classified in one of the following three types of Hispanic
noses; Type I (Castilian) includes a high bridge and normal tip projection, Type II has a low radix,
normal bridge, and an under-projecting tip, and Type III is made up of a broad base, wide tip and
very thick skin (the true Mestizo nose). An in-depth knowledge of each Hispanic nose classification is
very important because the treatment for each type is radically different. By providing structure and
support, Dr. Hovsepian is able to provide meaningful definition while making the nose more refined
and still maintaining its ethnic appearance.
Most Asian rhinoplasty patients want to build up the bridge and tip of the nose. Dr. Hovsepian uses a
soft material to augment the dorsum surgically. Some patients also need to have their nostrils tapered
to avoid a "flared" look. Nostril reduction often produce pleasant results.
African American patients frequently want to improve the shape and definition of their nose. The nose
may appear to have a low or broad bridge, the tip may seem wide and undefined, and the nostrils
may or may not be a concern. In profile, the bridge and tip may be underdeveloped. Contemporary
rhinoplasty for African American patients involves augmenting the bridge to define the appearance
and create better facial balance.

The surgery is an outpatient procedure, but some patients prefer an overnight stay. Out-of-town patients may stay in a near-by hotel or aftercare facility.
