Breast reconstruction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be completely asleep and feel nothing during surgery. The surgery takes a few hours, although you should expect to spend extra time in the operating room if your procedure will focus on multiple areas. The surgery may be performed as an outpatient procedure depending on its extensiveness, but some patients prefer an overnight stay. Out-of-town patients may stay in a near-by hotel or aftercare facility, where a "private duty" nurse is available if required. Afterward, you will return to your home, hotel or aftercare facility conveniently located a short distance from the surgical center.
